A journey towards environmentally friendly charcoal production.

The Ouse Valley Charcoal Story

For over a decade, Val had been making charcoal in a manner that was not very environmentally friendly! So on the basis you can’t excuse your ignorance or unhear stuff when made wise to certain facts, he set out to find the most environmentally friendly way to produce charcoal this as it turned out involved using a charcoal making retort to burn off the VOCs (tile organic compounds) the nasty stuff that’s in the smoke created when turning wood into charcoal, a process called pyrolysis

So why British made Ouse Valley Charcoal?

Some facts about supermarket charcoal you may not be aware of…

Sustainable Production

According to figures from the International Trade Centre, the UK imported over 98,000 tons of charcoal in 2020. We are the world’s seventh largest of importer of charcoal (OEC), and third largest in Europe

Innovative Techniques

This imported charcoal comes from a wide range of countries, including Nigeria, Namibia, and Paraguay, where illegal logging and deforestation are a huge problem.

Charcoal production for export in these countries are a major driver for unsustainable forestry practices and deforestation, leading to further problems for the environment including increased run off, soil erosion and desertification.
